Hong Leong Bank Berhad is a subsidiary of Hong Leong Group, which were founded in 1963 in Malaysia. What started as a building materials trading company has grown into one of the biggest conglomerates in South East Asia. Beside banking and financial services, Hong Leong Group are heavily into manufacturing, property development, investments, and hospitality and leisure.
Hong Leong Bank Berhad was originally known as Kwong Lee Mortgage and Remittance Company in 1905, and later as Kwong Lee Bank Berhad. In 1983, Kwong Lee Bank Berhad was renamed to Malayan United Bank Berhad after being acquired by the MUI Group – and later to MUI Bank in 1989. Hong Leong group acquired MUI Bank Berhad in 1994, and renamed it to Hong Leong Bank Berhad. In the same year, Hong Leong Bank was listed on Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. In 2011, Hong Leong Bank was placed as Malaysia’s fifth largest banking group after its merger with EON Bank Group.
